“This particular exercise works on watts at the threshold, with particular regard about VO2max during the strenght workouts. Generally, the watts at the threshold are reached by an increase of Newtons (optimal conditions for the athlete), with a consequent reduction in cadence to keep the wattage unchanged and stimulate the production of strenght over time. The Newton “command” of JARVIS smart trainer ensures that the result is fully achieved.”
Technique pills back in September! The MagneticDays Head Coach Simone Buracchi introduces another one fundamental cycling exercise of HTT Methodology of Training: WATT PROGRESSION AROUND THE THRESHOLD.
“Today’s workout concerns in No 4 watt progressions around the threshold – starting from 80% and reaching 105% – with the same ratio of 1 watt / 3 seconds for each progression. What is the difference? The method of execution is the key. In the watt progression No 1 (yellow circle) the cadence is chosen by the athlete. In the second, instead, cadence increases with the wattage according to the ideal rhythms (purple circle). The progression No3 (red circle), is performed on the basis of strength, i.e. always using a cadence of 10 RPM lower than the athlete’s ideal one. The last progression (blue circle) is performed in agility, at a higher cadence than the athlete’s ideal. The goal of these progressions is twofold: on the one hand they stimulate HR zones that are “sensitive” to the improvement of cardiac output, on the other hand, these progressions are used that enhance strength and oxygen consumption.”

“Today’s workout concerns in two equal Newton-based steps (as shown in the yellow circle) without recovery. The goal is to reach the predetermineted value of Watt. In both cases the athlete uses the same cadence (athlete’s cadence at the threshold) but a different value of Newton (force applied to the pedals): with OFFSET equal to -5 (compared to the value of Newton at the threshold), then -3 and finally 0 (at the threshold) as shown in the pink circle. Playing with different values of Newtons and times of exposure to cycling exercise, the athlete can reach the desiderable value of Watts with a partial recovery of the muscle stimuli. The goal of these steps workout, indeed, is to learn how to overcome the resistant forces that gradually become more important.”

“This exercise – fixed Newton based – uses cadence (rhythm) as a Watt modulator. A constant value of Newton (yellow circles) represent a step workout with variable value of cadence (and Watt) as shown in the red circles. So, the training stimulus mainly depends on the cardio-respiratory system and the muscular system is constantly stimulated on the basis of the Coach’s choice of Newton value. This value will not change during the cycling exercise; in other words, whatever the cadence applied to the pedals by the athlete, Newton’s value (and therefore the strength) will not vary. This exercise is only possible on JARVIS smart trainer, because it allows to work on Watt, RPM and Newton in a separately and specifically way.”

The MagneticDays Head Coach Simone Buracchi introduces another one fundamental cycling exercise of HTT Methodology of Training: THE CYCLING PROGRESSION AT FIXED VALUE OF NEWTON (WITH INCREASE OF WATT + RPM).
“Cadence increases as force (load applied to your pedals) increases, under indoor and outdoor conditions. In this case (as shown in the graph below), pedalling frequency and Watts increase (rec circle) but not the force applied to your pedals (Newton) that remains unvaried (fixed value of Newton at the threshold as shown in the yellow circle). What do we mean when we talk about Cycling Progression at fixed value of Newton? The purpose of this type of cycling exercise (that can only be done with JARVIS smart trainer) is to work separately on Force and Cadence in a focused way. Generally (outdoor conditions), cadence increases (with the same bike gear ratio) of 5 Watts for 1 pedalling that are equally distributed between Newton and RPM. In this case – as shown in the graph below – the value of Newton is fixed and Watts increase of 3 for 1 pedalling. So, the cardio-respiratory system works more than the muscular one if necessary to rebalance these two components.”

“The purpose of this type of cycling exercise (red circle in the graph below) is to optimize the relationship between cadence and force, with the goal to increase Bike Power in terms of Watts. The athlete, on the basis of his physiological values, must pedal a progression (in terms of cadence) from 80 RPM (medium threshold) to 90 RPM (at the threshold) with a ratio Watt/Time equal to 1:4. (1 watt each 4 seconds). The aim of this exercise is to investigate the relationship between RPM and Watt. But.. what does cycling progression at the optimal RPM? There is not exist a standard RPM value but exist an ideal value on the basis of the value of watts that the athlete is be able to produce. In this type of progression (and with these values), the athlete starts from his medium threshold (80 RPM) to reach the threshold (90 RPM) with the goal to thus managing to optimize the relationship between cadence and force.”

MagneticDays Metronome function is one of the latest additions available in the release 2.8.0 of App MD WiFi. It allows to improve che cycling cadence (in single or double mode) when the step “RECOMMENDED CADENCE (IDEAL RPM MODALITY)” is ON. The MagneticDays Metronome function can be activated from My Account section.
Relase 2.8.0 App MD WiFi | ACTIVITIES section
The release 2.8.0 of App MD WiFi includes also the new ACTIVITIES section, which can be viewed in the Menu after the log in. In this new section you can view the list of all executed workouts with their respective synchronization status.

Relase 2.7.0 App MD WiFi | SPRINT and STOP
SPRINT and STOP are the last functions introduced with the release 2.7.0 of App MD WiFi. SPRINT function allows to make an acceleration (improve of cycling cadence) keeping the magnetic brake in the fixed position. STOP function (managed by the MD Coach) concerns the stop of cycling movement during the recovery step within the HTT workout. When the MD Coach chooses to use the STOP function, the timer indicator continues to go ahead even if the user/athlete doesn’t move his legs, because this condition represent a step of training. SPRINT and STOP are already available and can be used by the MD Coach to analyze the performance, therefore the user/athlete can’t modify this function directly.
Relase 2.7.0 App MD WiFi | How to enable the calibration of HTT workouts
The release 2.7.0 of App MD WiFi also introduces the possibility to calibrate the HTT workouts – via App – by the modification of percentage of training intensity. Here’s the directions:
Sign in to your personal account on App MD WiFi
Click on the Menu Settings, select My Account and enable the button Calibrate next HTT workout
Click on the Menu Settings and select Workout
Use the buttons +/- and select the percentage of recalculation of training intensity*, then click on Next
*Recalculation has effect on all steps of HTT workout. There’s not possibility to modify only some steps. When the workout is finished, this function is automatically deactivated, then you must repeat the procedure every time you want calibrate the HTT workout.

MagneticDays Multitest: what is it?
The MagneticDays Multitest represents the last news in terms of incremental test developed by MagneticDays. It involves:
✅ 1 incremental test 1:1 (1 watt for 1 second) | medium speed
✅ 2 incremental tests 8:1 (8 watt for 1 second; the same test is repeated twice for evaluate the best result) | high speed
✅ 1 incremental test 1:8 (1 watt for 8 seconds) | very slow speed
The value that we consider for a good evaluation of MagneticDays Multitest is the last value of Watt reached in the last step completed for each test. After these tests have been performed, the respective values must be represented by a graph to obtain a hyperbola. The next step is to calculate the ratio between high speed test (8:1) and very slow speed test (1:8), and between high speed test (8:1) and medium speed test (1:1).

The higher this ratio the greater the tendency to speed of the athlete. On the contrary, the lower this ratio the greater the tendency to endurance of the athlete. The MagneticDays Multitest has the goal to analyze some specific features of the athlete like speed and endurance and it will be inserted in the HTT training planning by the Coach MD.
